Aikido Terminology

Attacks

  • Shomen uchi - Front strike
  • Yokomen uchi - Side strike to head
  • Shomen tsuki - Front punch
  • Katate mochi - Single hand grasp (kata - single, te - hand)
  • Ryote mochi - Both hand grasp
  • Katate ayamochi - Cross hand grasp
  • Mune mochi - Lapel/chest grasp
  • Hiji mochi - Elbow grasp
  • Kata mochi - Shoulder grasp ('kata' also means shoulder)

Technique Types
  • Hanmi handachi - One seated, one standing
  • Jiyu waza - Free-style technique(s)
  • Suwari waza - Both Seated (kneeling)
  • Tachi waza - Standing
  • Ushiro waza - From Behind

Terms Used in Class
  • Kamae - Basic Stance
  • Migi hanmi kamae - Right hand stance
  • Hidari hanmi kamae - Left hand stance
  • Ai-hanmi kamae - Mutual posture, both right or left Kamae
  • Gyaku hanmi kamae - Opposite kamae, one right and one left Kamae
  • Seiza (ho) - Sitting (method)

Warmup and Exercises
  • Sh'te - Person Applying the technique
  • Uke - Person receiving the technique
  • Ukemi - Break falls
  • Atemi - Strikes, punches
  • Tai no henko ichi - Cross step and body change
  • Tai no henko ni - 95 degree pivot
  • Hiriki no yosei ichi - elbow power I
  • Hiriki no yosei ni - elbow power II
  • Shumatsu dosa ichi - after-class exercise I
  • Shumatsu dosa ni - after-class exercise II
  • Shikko ho - knee-walking method
  • Moku so - close your eyes & prepare yourself mentally for class.
  • Sensei ni rei - bow to Sensei
  • Seitetsu - Line up
  • Seiza - kneeling position
  • Anza - cross leg sitting position
  • Otagai ni rei - bow to each other
  • Onajiku - repeat same technique on the other side changing from L to R
  • Sh'te, Uke kotai - attacker & defender change sides
  • Hajime - begin
  • Yame- stop
  • Kakari geiko - "round robin" style of training
  • Domo arigato gozaimashita
